What Are You A Witness To?

Acts 1:8 NASB

… and you shall be My Witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and Samaria, and as far as the remotest part of the earth.

What is a witness?

Dictionary.com defines witness as:

  1. To see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception
  2. To be present at (an occurrence) as a formal witness, spectator, bystander, etc.
  3. To bear witness to; testify to; give or afford evidence of
  4. To attest by one’s signature

In replacing Judas, the disciple who betrayed Jesus, one of the requirements was that he must be a witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The apostles physically saw Jesus.

They walked with Him.

They talked to Him.

They touched Him.

They ate meals together.

They traveled together.

Some might even say it was easier for the disciples. After all, wouldn’t it be easier to believe if we could just physically see Jesus? Or so we think…

Perhaps we’ll save that question for the Pharisees, and all those who saw, and still didn’t believe.

Lies – The Trick of the Enemy

Jesus wasn’t talking to you.

I have long struggled with the Scriptures where Jesus instructs his disciples to go make disciples (Mathew 28:16-20), or as in the opening scripture, to be His witnesses.

I didn’t think I was a disciple, nor was I confident in my ability to make disciples.

In hindsight, it was a lie from the pits of hell. The enemy wants me, and you, to believe Jesus wasn’t talking to us.

I am here to proclaim; Jesus is talking to YOU!

The disciples made disciples… Their disciples made disciples.. Their disciples made disciples…

And now, here you and I are, with a torch in our hands carrying the flame of Jesus. Making His disciples, not our own. It’s my assignment, and yours too, to point others to Jesus.

Isn’t that mind blowing? That Jesus trusts us enough to carry His ministry forward.

For those of you searching. Yes, you have a ministry. You are a co-laborer.

I’m A Witness

While none of us living today, aside from God – Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, none of us literally saw Jesus. We aren’t witnesses to his literal life and resurrection, but that doesn’t disqualify you, or me.

Jesus tells Thomas, blessed are those who believe but do not see. You are blessed!

Being that you and I aren’t physical witnesses, what can we possibly be a witness too?

I’m so very glad you asked.

Here’s a short list of the things Jesus has done in my life. These things, my friend, are what I’m a witness too.

Exhibit A

I am a witness to the never stopping, never giving up, always and forever love of God.

When I was blind and steeped in sin (sexual immorality and pride), He never stopped loving me.

God’s love is not like man’s love. In man’s eyes we must earn love. In God’s eyes, it’s a gift to all those who believe in His Son.

I am a believer, and I can testify to His incomprehensible, unsearchable love.

Exhibit B

I am a witness to the depravity of my heart.

There’s so much wickedness on the inside of me (thinking of myself more highly than others, jealousy, pride, etc.)

If it were not for Jesus, I would still be blind and unaware of the darkness that lives inside of me. After all, the darkness in my heart looks a lot like what I see in the world. If it were not for Jesus, how would I know? I would just blend in with everybody else.

Only Jesus can shine light in the darkness.

Don’t be dismayed, the darker it is, the better the backdrop for the light of Jesus.

Exhibit C

I am a witness to God’s grace and mercy.

I should literally be dead. For the wages of sin is death.

My life, and yours too, is astounding proof of His grace and mercy.

And let us never forget, Jesus. He bleeds grace and mercy.

Exhibit D

I am a witness to the FREEDOM found in Christ.

I am no longer striving. Hustling. Securing the bag.

No longer do I place my value in the things of this world (my body, my degrees, the car I drive, the amount of money I make, etc.)

With God, I don’t have to prove myself. As a matter of fact, the death of Jesus proves my value, and yours.

There is no greater proof!

Exhibit E

I am a witness to the inside out transformation described in Romans 12:2.

The way I think and what I do have been totally transformed. Turned inside out. Flipped upside down.

For the longest time, I was pursuing the things of this world (money, awards, fame, etc.).

NO MORE! Sometimes I lose my focus, but Jesus always comes to my rescue.

He is my Shepard. I am His sheep. So are you.

Your Turn

I could literally keep going, the goodness of God is inexhaustible, but I would love to hear from you. What are you a witness to?

Let’s give God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit some praise in the comments.

Let’s see those exhibits!

Until next time…..
